Cade, or wild juniper, grows wild in the Provençal scrubland, where it is harvested and distilled into an essential oil. In the past, shepherds used the oil to protect their faces.

L'OCCITANE uses cade from near the village of Le Chaffaut. The wood is cut into small chips which are distilled to produce the essential oil. The harvesting of cade helps to protect the Provençal scrubland. It is a shrub, and its rapid growth can cause harm to other plant species in the area. Cade-picker Jean-Louis Delfour says the wood reminds him of his childhood, and the smell of his father's workshop in Thiers.
